focused analysis: sounds/ music

the average sounds and music in a horror film consist of high pitched staccato eerie tunes, often played by xylophones and glockenspiels, these are used mainly in trailers, supernatural horrors and in scenes involving demented or possessed children, perhaps because they are seen as childish instruments. The most common use of sound in film and trailers for horror, is the crescendo, when the music gradually gets louder and faster. this is commonly followed by complete silence and then another loud sound in order to shock the audience.
film trailers often use the glockenspiel music to make longer scenes seem creepy, these are almost always at the beginning or end, classical music such as "O Fortuna" and "winter overture" as these create tension and also build a crescendo. Classical music is usually minor when used in this genre and often ominous.
personally it makes me feel small, because it is a large powerful orchestra which controls the mood of the film.
this however is not always the case, some just use unusual drone like sounds, some use music tracks from bands and others create a melody which is normally in the minor key.
