Magazine cover

With my previous knowledge of magazines and the research i carried out, i have been able to create a magazine cover tailored to a specific genre
my previous knowledge of magazines from my AS project allowed me to create a layout of which is effective and would catch the attention of the target audience, There is a large image on the cover showing this issue's main story, from the previous research on magazines such as "Fangoria" it has proved that shocking images are far more eye catching and suitable for the horror genre, therefore i have placed an image of the villains scarred face as the large main image. This particular image works well as it blends into the colour scheme of black and red, which has been used for a dark effect.
The caption to the main image says "Memoria shows new face of horror" clearly stating the topic and connotating the image, telling the audience that it is to be related to the film "Memoria" which is why the text is posted on top of the image.
The masthead is "ASYLUM" as it refers to a medical institution which is used in a lot of horror films as a setting due to the fear and horror of psychologically unstable people. These reasons paired with the feedback we got from our target audience make our reasoning for this name, the font was obtained from www.dafont.com and is called "cold night for alligators." We used this font because it gives the impression that the words are written in blood, which contributes to the iconography of a horror magazine. It has been placed at the top of the magazine because that is the conventional position for any magazine as its an easy place to find.
for authentication i have placed a barcode, issue number and issue date at the top of the magazine where it is easily found.
On the top i have placed a promotion against a golden line, this is to outline and bring attention because it is a different colour, the reasoning behind this is to entice the reader with a competition and luxurious prize.
A pug has been placed on the cover, this is to attract the readers attention as it is bright in comparison to the rest of the magazine, it's designed to look like a sticker which has been added on after production (hence the peel at the edge) this coupled with a lens flare i place on it makes it stand out, this brings attention to the subject of "asylums" best horror movies, indicating movie reviews.
Along the side, like all magazines there are sub-stories, we have chosen to place images denoting the stories as in a questionnaire most people said that they preferred to see more images on a magazine cover, and we have decided to follow the ideas of "EMPIRE" magazine by not having a bar but instead having the main image as a background.
I researched up coming horror films of 2010-2011 to make it suitable and interesting, one was about a new film involving demons, this contains a caption loosely describing the story and and a shocking image of a burnt person.
The other is about the extremely well known film trilogy "Scream" and their new release, the familiarity of the name scream and image of the ghostface killer will attract the attention of anybody keen about horror movies.
The colour scheme is made up of red and black because of the iconography of the colours, black indicates darkness and the unknown whilst red indicates danger, blood and death in this case, combined, these two colours create a subliminal atmosphere of horror, in the fact that without having to think, the viewer would immediately know the genre.
